Star Trek: Discovery - Ups And Downs For Season 3 Episode 4 Forget Me Not

4. Killing Gray So Easily (DOWN)

Star Trek Discovery Adira And Gray
CBS

Ian Alexander has finally arrived in Star Trek: Discovery and, after the much publicized inclusion of Star Trek's first openly trans-gendered actor - is killed within moments of arriving. However, it is not the fact that Gray died that is receiving a down (as Gray quickly returns in the form of a waking vision to Adira). It is the manner in which Gray died.

During a flashback, the audience sees Gray and Adira together and it is evident that they are very much in love. Adira makes a gift of a story blanket to Gray and, as they enjoy it, an asteroid comes out of nowhere and sends their ship the way of the Titanic.

This is a show where people can be impaled by falling objects and return to work mere hours later (as is stated in this episode) and yet Gray is killed when a relatively small shard of glass pierces straight through their body.

While there is nothing to suggest that most people wouldn't have trouble skipping away after something like this happened to them, to have this be the means of killing a character while simultaneously suggesting that this kind of bodily harm bears no real problem, if you are a main character, stood out a little too much this week.
