What a trickster Mike McMahan is. In our interview with the showrunner of Star Trek: Lower Decks, we asked if he was teasing the audience with that reveal in The New Next Generation. Suffice it to say that the jury can come to their own conclusions there.
The argument of what is and is not canon in Star Trek continues to rage. Star Trek: Discovery is often cited as an alternate timeline, thus excusing the aesthetic changes. However, the show was advertised as being part of the main overall canon from its earliest promos. With that being the case, what of the new Klingon design?
Mike McMahan seemingly knew exactly what he was doing when he included that big change in his finale. When struck by an anomaly, the Klingons the audience was used to seeing in the 90s suddenly transformed into those Klingons introduced in The Vulcan Hello. That same anomaly is revealed to be a gate into other universes.
The internet broke into fresh arguments as to whether or not this confirmed the Discovery Klingons were from an alternate timeline. While McMahan refused to confirm or deny this, there was a definite tongue-in-cheek feel to the scene. The audience may have been just as surprised as the warrior watching their hand turn purple. It was a challenge not to see the funny side of it, even with the instant uproar about canon.
