Star Wars Rebels Season 3: 12 Best Moments
1. The Battle Of Atollon
Zero Hour featured the first large scale battle that the series has brought to our screens. After Fulcrum’s message fails to reach them in time, Thrawn arrives with a fleet of Star Destroyers and a pair of Interdictors, introduced in Season Two’s Stealth Strike, to keep them from escaping.
There were so many great moments that built up this episode, but the Battle of Atollon kept delivering and it’s impossible to pick a favourite.
The orbital bombardment of Chopper Base while the shield generator barely holds was beautifully directed, cutting between shots of both Hera and Thrawn as if they were standing right in front of one another. Sato’s sacrifice, though talked about in a previous entry, was still a great moment that also brought about the end of Admiral Constantine. And of course, Ezra’s attack on the final Interdictor with the help of a returning Sabine and members of Clan Wren.
While the episode has been criticised for not giving Thrawn a meaningful victory over the Rebels (what they wanted was the death of a key character), Zero Hour did show the true might of the Empire that was only hindered by Bendu’s intervention. The Rebels barely escaped and took heavy losses, especially if you count the number of ships that actually escaped.
The whole series had been building up to the invasion of Lothal, and while that has had a pin put in it for now, the Battle of Atollon was a worthy substitute, that gave Thrawn a platform to demonstrate his tactical nature and ability as an efficient commander and an example demonstrating that the Empire doesn’t always have to lose.
