Star Wars Rebels Season 3: 12 Best Moments
6. Bendu's Warning
Rebels went down a very different route
when they introduced the Bendu into the Star Wars canon. A creature of the
Force, but unlike anything we have seen before, neither the light or the dark,
but the one in the middle. Tom Baker was the perfect choice to voice such a
bizarre, yet intimidating character and the writing did a great job at keeping
his true allegiances as vague and obscure as possible.
Specific highlights include the Bendu plucking Ezra’s Thumper out of the ground without them realising, drawing the spiders in closer, and let’s not forget when Sabine kicked Bendu out of frustration, not that she knew that it was him of course.
But it was in the season finale where Bendu got his best moments. At first this was going to be about the storm that Bendu becomes, which may have been a teeny bit of an ex-Machina, but was spectacular nonetheless. But no, this is about the warning that Bendu gives to Thrawn.
It’s a fantastic moment for both characters, with Thrawn witnessing for the first time, this other side of the Force that is unknown to him, and far more threatening. The Bendu, who even in his final (or are they?) moments, taunts Thrawn of his fate, passing on one last piece of foreshadowing. And then, just as Thrawn fires his weapon, Bendu vanishes, leaving nothing but a scorch mark and his sinister laugh haunting their ears.
Bendu may be back. Maybe he won’t. But needless to say, he has left a lasting mark on Thrawn’s character, one that we hope to see more of in the season to come.
