The Simpsons: 14 Most Controversial Episodes Of All Time

5. Homer€™s Phobia

Though The Simpsons has touched on LGBT issues in the past €“ you€™d be an idiot not to have noticed Smithers€™ obvious affection for Mr. Burns €“ Homer€™s Phobia was the first episode to focus solely on homosexuality. According to episode showrunner Bill Oakley, the only real controversy that arose from the episode was the initial reaction from Fox€™s censors who felt the topic of homosexuality was unacceptable for broadcast and took offence at the use of the word €˜gay€™. Luckily though, Fox underwent a staff overhaul and its new censors approved the episode for broadcast. Obviously a good move on their part as Homer€™s Phobia went on to win both the 1997 Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Programme and a GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) Media Award.

Helen Jones hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
