The Bouvier twins are often lumped together, so it makes sense to do so here as well. On the surface, they seem like a simple ploy to give Marge's family a feeling of being the unpleasant in-laws, but there is hidden depth to them that makes Patty and Selma more than that.

Part of the show's humour comes from how mean-spirited and harsh it can be, and that's found in abundance with these two. Their chain-smoking, gravely voices and jobs at the DMV make them a constant source of rudeness and unpleasantry, making it hilarious to see them give people a hard time.

However, you also get to see more complex sides to them, notably in episodes like "Selma's Choice", where Selma attempts to test her maternal instincts, or "A Fish Called Selma", where she marries Troy McClure. Seeing this closer side to Selma is excellent, and it also proposes some big changes in Patty, making them equally developed.
