The Walking Dead: 10 Horrifying Comic Book Moments Never In The TV Show

8. Carl Executes Ben

The Walking Dead Rick Grimes Death
Image Comics

In the comics, the original Atlanta Camp has more members, including a family with twin sons, Billy and Ben. At first, the twins are most often seen as playmates of Carl Grimes. When both of the boys' parents die, they are adopted by Dale and Andrea. Over time, Ben begins displaying subtle psychopathic tendencies. This culminates in a tragic moment when, while on the road after escaping the Prison, the group discovers that Ben has murdered his brother. He reasons that Billy will simply come back, since his brain was unharmed.

Horrified, but unsure how to handle the situation, the other survivors lock Ben in a van while they struggle to decide his fate. While most believe they will have to kill Ben for their own safety, Andrea and Dale, who have come to love Ben as their own, fight for the troubled boy to be spared.

That night, with the decision not yet made, Carl sneaks into the van and shoots Ben dead for the good of the group. While he never backs down from believing the execution was necessary, Ben's death haunts Carl for a long time afterwards. While a version of this storyline does play out in the show, with Carol putting down the mentally ill Lizzie after she kills her sister, Mika, the idea of a child taking such a decision upon themselves is chilling.
