In the end, though, the best episode of the season has to be No Way Out, the mid-season premiere that follows Rick, Carl, Michonne and the Anderson family as they try to escape the walker herd inside Alexandria's walls.
Featuring the brutal demise of the entire Anderson family and the loss of Carl's eye, the episode is utterly hopeless, opening with Daryl blowing up a group of Saviours with a rocket launcher before descending into all-out horror.
Intense, unpredictable and violent, No Way Out soars with its drama, but reaches an entirely new level of greatness when the entire population of Alexandria band together to kill the walker herd and save their home.
It's bloody, shocking, and explosive (Daryl uses the launcher again to distract the herd), and ends with great promise when Carl is revealed to be alive and well. It's not just the best of the season, but one of the very best of the entire show.
