The Walking Dead Season 7: 6 Ups And 4 Downs From 'Say Yes'

2. A Focus On Rick And Michonne's Relationship

Since taking the slightly surprising decision of putting the pair together, the show hasn't explored the romantic relationship between Rick and Michonne too much. It's always been there, but in the background of the larger issues faced in each episode, left instead to a brief conversation or fleeting touch.

This episode gives a chance to give the deepest exploration yet of their relationship, both getting to show off their chemistry and how they work together, but also what they mean to each other and in turn how that could play out in the future given the world they're living in.

The pair have developed a great rapport, as we see in some of the witty exchanges they have throughout, but also quite clearly a deep affection for each other. The scene where they have dinner together - chilli and mac'n'cheese together! - is a rare sweet, quiet little moment that the show doesn't often afford, and Lincoln and Gurira make the most of the opportunity.

Rick and Michonne are going to be together for the long-haul (or at least as long as they both stay alive, which should be a while yet) so they need to be a believable couple. The show hadn't done a bad job on that front anyway, but this one really cements it, and it was nice to see a different side to the show and these two central characters.
