Vikings: 10 Most Hated Supporting Characters

1. Ælle

History

King Ælle of Northumbria was the worst kind of ruler. He was bloodthirsty, gluttonous, besotted, and unforgiving. He enjoyed divising elaborate deaths to execute his enemies and those who failed them. He respected no one, including his family. He betrayed his brother and told his daughter she failed at motherhood.

As king, you'd assume Ælle would be diplomatic when it came to ending conflicts without bloodshed. But since the vikings were pagans, he felt no obligation to honour any agreement with Ragnar or his people. Since he was not an honourable man with his people, friends, diplomats, or family, Ælle is among the few characters in Vikings that doesn't have a single redeemable quality.

However, Ælle's most defining moment is what makes him such a detestable creature - it is he who killed the Viking's greatest hero, Ragnar Lothbrok. After having Kattegat's ruler caged, starved, and tortured, the Northumbrian king dropped him into a pit of snakes, where he was bitten to death.

When Ragnar's sons captured Ælle, the once proud ruler devolved into a whimpering child, proving his pomp was pure bluster. Even though he endured the agonising Blood Eagle ritual, it still felt like he deserved a worse fate.
