Why Every Modern Companion Left Doctor Who

8. Pearl Mackie - Bill Potts

Bill Potts went through the wringer in series 10, she almost died saving the Earth from the Monks, got shot through the chest, and then got converted into a Cyberman. Such a grueling treadmill of trauma may have been reflective of how Steven Moffat was feeling when he sat down to write his sixth and final series of Doctor Who.

Ahead of Doctor Who series 10, Steven Moffat was persuaded to stay for one more season while the BBC waited for production on the final season of Chris Chibnall's Broadchurch to wrap. As a result, Pearl Mackie's departure at the end was an inevitability, given that Chibnall would want a completely clean slate for his new era of the show.
