Shinsuke Nakamura became only the second-ever two-time NXT Champion by defeating Samoa Joe at a house show in Osaka, Japan at the tail end of last year. An edited version of this match would air on the 7 December edition of NXT's weekly television show before the full match was shown on the 28 December episode.

After losing the title to the Samoan Submission Machine at November's NXT TakeOver:Toronto, The King Of Strong Style regained his title thanks to a Kinshasa Knee in his homeland. This would be the second time the developmental brand's top title would change hands when the cameras weren't rolling in 2016.

Nakamura would hold the title for 56 days before losing it to Bobby Roode at TakeOver: San Antonio.
