6. Karaoke
For the most part, WWE’s women’s division has been fairly well served in 2020. Becky Lynch stepping off our screens due to her pregnancy was a bummer from an in-ring perspective but heartwarming nonetheless, and Sasha, Bayley, and Asuka pretty much held things down during the early days of the pandemic era and wrestled some superb matches.
And then there’s July’s Smackdown Karaoke. Hosted by Jey Uso, the segment saw Dana Brook, Tamina, Lacey Evans, and Naomi take it in turns to sing their favourite WWE themes in the empty performance centre.
One can only assume that the writers were particularly short on material that week, as this is the definition of filler. It’s also one of the most cringeworthy segments WWE has ever broadcast - no short list - and a waste of time for all involved, particularly the hugely talented Naomi.
It was emblematic of the “stuff just happens” nature of modern WWE programming. It wasn’t fun, it wasn’t entertaining, and it didn’t advance anyone’s character. It was just sort of… there.
