10 Times John Cena Embraced Being A Heel

8. He Embraces His Haters

€œLet€™s Go Cena!€ is a common cry among many members of the WWE Universe as they will their hero onto victory. It€™s often met by the duelling chant €œCENA SUCKS€ which is often louder and deeper, signalling the adult male audience who hate everything Cena represents and actively root against him no matter who he faces. It€™s a phenomenon that€™s been going on for years, and recently Cena revealed the reason for it. In an interview with Mutton Town Chops Gazette, Cena told a story where he was at a party in 2005, and a number of prominent wrestling bloggers were also there. He turned down their interview requests and went home, so in return at SummerSlam they organised a movement to get €œCENA SUCKS!€ chants started and it all went from there. What€™s genius of Cena is that he doesn€™t try and change these people€™s minds. He€™s the first wrestler that€™s a face and a heel at the same time, depending who you ask. He€™ll often do as much to rile up his haters as he does to please his fans, even posing with audience members wearing anti-Cena gear in the crowd. As he said in an interview with Larry King earlier this year.
"My situation is peculiar, a lot of fans - the older males - want me to be a bad guy, so they boo me. I'm already getting booed. Aren't I already the bad guy?"
