10 Times WWE Stipulations Meant Nothing
4. CM Punk Vs. John Cena (Money In The Bank 2011... Again)
Back to that fateful night in Chicago now and this time the spotlight is on the other half of the main event. While Cena not being fired was always going to be the outcome, regardless of how convoluted the storyline got, CM Punk’s return was entirely another matter.
Because despite the internet, fans genuinely did not know if Punk leaving was legit or a work. In the build up to the match, we had been told in no uncertain terms that if Punk won, he would be taking the WWE title with him and it would be the last we saw of it. In truth, if that iconic kiss did seal the WWE title’s exit from the company, I doubt too many would have complained. The moment was pure magic.
Of course, as we all know, two weeks later, Cult of Personality resonated through the arena and the Voice of Voiceless made his triumphant return, with his belt hoisted high above his shoulders. The lead-up to Money in the Bank had gotten us more excited than anything else in recent memory, but alas the stakes were never real.
