5 Ways John Cena Could Make His WWE Return

Speaking of the Royal Rumble...

It would be surprising if Cena is not seen again before then, but, if WWE are patient enough, they could maximise the drama of his return by saving it for the Philadelphia pay-per-view.

A surprise return in the Royal Rumble match has become a bit of a cliché, but that certainly doesn’t make it a bad thing. They are usually received very well by the live crowd, as evidenced in 2008 when Cena came back early from a pectoral injury to enter at number 30.

A repeat 10 years on would not result in the same shock, but it would still be a memorable and poetic moment, and thrust Cena straight into the spotlight on the road to WrestleMania. WWE will want 'The Franchise Player' back for those crucial months.

If there is a Cena-less WWE Championship feud lined up, such as AJ Styles versus Shinsuke Nakamura, having him win the match is not necessary, (although it would be preferable to Reigns being the last man standing as he heads towards a showdown with Brock Lesnar).

The 16-time world champion has so much credibility that failing to win from number 30 would not jeopardise his star power heading into ‘Mania, and his elimination could be used to set up the opponent that WWE has in mind for him at 'The Showcase of the Immortals'.

Could this be Samoa Joe or Kevin Owens? We may learn when 'The Champ' is here, again.
