8 WWE Stars Who Worked (By Not Working)

8. Bret Hart

The intended plan for WrestleMania 13 featured an audacious double turn for Steve Austin and Bret Hart, one which would leave the 'Hitman' playing heel for the first time since becoming a genuine singles star in 1991.

Bret's new character was supposed to be hated everywhere, but the WWF didn't take into account the national hero aura Hart had cultivated in his native Canada. Outside the United States, the once-universally popular champ remained very much babyface.

A planned heel turn hadn't worked out as intended, but not all was lost. Quickly, Hart developed an anti-American character that simultaneously left him loathed in the States just as much as he was revered everywhere else.

The flopping heel turn was saved by Bret's patriotism and vitriolic promos about how America had turned on him. Meanwhile, fans in Canada and Europe refused to boo their favourite or even entertain the idea of Hart's gimmick change at all.
