Ranking John Cena's WrestleMania Matches - From Worst To Best
8. Vs. The Rock II - WrestleMania XXIX
We should know better than to trust the words of the WWE by now, but this still leaves one heck of a sour taste in the mouth. 'Once in a Lifetime' they said, a dream match for the ages that we'll get once and once alone, maintaining the special atmosphere that such an encounter needs. Well, for the second straight year John Cena and The Rock went one on one in the main event of WrestleMania, proving that 'Once in a Lifetime' was actually 'Twice in a Lifetime'. This time it was for the WWE Championship, which added extra bitterness in the mouths of fans. The Rock was the champion coming in. and he won the title by ending CM Punk's 434-day reign at the Royal Rumble. It was another big moment for a fresh superstar ended in a desperate attempt to keep old stars relevant. Unlike other big rematches, Cena/Rock II didn't even come with the promise of potentially improving on the first. Rocky hasn't been a full time performer for a very long time, and Cena's best matches have always come against top tier workers. As such this was flat, an exercise in all of WWE's most infuriating tropes. It focused on past stars over new ones and saw a superstar get his win back. All it was missing was a distraction finish.
Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
