WWE Royal Rumble 2013: 5 Things We Learnt

4. Bring WWE Back To The US Airways Center Soon

The crowd in Phoenix, Arizona were absolutely on fire on Sunday night, making sure that no matter the match or the moment, it was given its deserved reaction from this fantastic crowd. From the opening World Championship match up until the main event they made sure that the superstars performed at the best of their ability. During the first match you had an immediate sense that this crowd was desperate to get their voices heard, as they wooped and hollered at every chair shot and crash through the tables. The fans truly appreciated the spectacles that were going on before their eyes, and seemed grateful and very appreciative for the work that occurred in the ring. The Royal Rumble in particular had an incredible atmosphere as the crowd warmed immediately to the situation, a mixed reaction for Dolph Ziggler before the noise hit the roof with the emergence of Chris Jericho. For the first time in my life I heard a sustained "Goldust" chant from the crowd, and the brief appearance of the Godfather attracted great fanfare as well. The usual mixed reactions for superstars such as John Cena, Randy Orton and Ryback were there but seemingly the volume had been raised up, with the fast-paced action at the end of the Rumble leaving everybody guessing who would win the match. Finally, at the main event the crowd reached a fever pitch when The Rock emerged for his first match since WrestleMania 28, and while the match in my opinion fell a little short of expectations, the crowd were definitely enjoying the once-in-a-lifetime feel of the match. The shocked expressions when it seemed as though CM Punk had retained his belt were transferred to the viewer of home, as the sounds of the crowd carried the television audience along with them, sharing in the ups and downs. The biggest pop (besides the return of Jericho) was saved for The Rock's return to the summit of professional wrestling, as the audience still had the stamina to carry the match to the very end and join in celebration of the People's Champion. I definitely hope that the WWE soon returns to this arena, and the crowd can take as many plaudits as the wrestlers for making it a night to remember.
