10 Best Comic Book Moments Of 2019
5. Die Introduces Solomon - Die #1
While it's perhaps unusual to place Die among a list containing largely Marvel and DC's beloved superheroes, not including it would be even more bizarre a choice, as the DnD-based story has managed to outsell a fair amount of the series put out by the 'big two' of comics.
Arguably, this is because Die sets itself up perfectly to get you invested in the story, such as when it ends its first issue by showing you the series' 'villain', Solomon. Little is explained about Solomon, aside from that he used to be friends with the protagonists, he got trapped in the world they're forced back into at the start of the series - oh, and that he has huge glowing dice for eyes, which is pretty hard to ignore.
This moment is cool in two profoundly different ways. On one hand, it immediately establishes the theme of being trapped in your past that is so crucial to every character within the story. On the other hand, you can't look at a man with dice embedded in his face and not want to know what the story is behind all that, because it looks equal parts cool and absolutely nightmarish.
Though our beloved caped crusaders will always take precedent in comics, highlighting the extremely high standards the independent comic industry continues to set is still incredibly important - especially with a series that's very much the cream of the crop.
