Tommy Elliot was born a child of wealth and privilege and was friends with young Bruce Wayne, often beating him in strategy games. But unlike the loving Wayne home, Elliot’s father was an abusive alcoholic and his mother was more worried about holding on to the wealth. As a young man, Elliot tried to kill his parents by cutting their brake line. His father died but his mother was saved by Dr. Thomas Wayne, sparking Elliot’s resentment of the elder Wayne.

Having eventually smothered his over-possessive mother with a pillow, Tommy went to medical school and encountered Edward Nashton when working as a neurosurgeon. The Riddler attempted to sell the knowledge of the Lazarus Pits to the young doctor, while Elliot wanted Nygma’s help getting revenge on his old friend, Bruce Wayne. Riddler revealed to Elliot that Batman and Bruce Wayne were one and the same, and Elliot adopted the identity of Hush to put his plan in motion to tear the Dark Knight down.

Elliot employed, threatened, or tricked many of Batman’s rogues gallery into helping him with his plan to destroy Batman’s life through relentless attacks on him and his allies and friends. At one point, he even removed Catwoman’s heart and kept it frozen using technology from Mr. Freeze. Elliot’s worst act against Batman was to have plastic surgery to look just like Bruce Wayne.
