4. Batman: The Widening Gyre
While his work on Daredevil and Green Arrow may be as celebrated as his movies Clerks and Chasing Amy, that was not the Kevin Smith who would take on Batman. Long gone was the nerd-made-good who was the voice of a generation; this was a Kevin Smith who had grown complacent and a caricature of himself. Far more interested in shilling for larger publishers or promoting his brand than creating anything with the heart or humour that had helped him reach notoriety in pop culture.
When DC announced that he would be writing a Batman story, fans were sceptical. Still, the idea Batman would take on Onomatopoeia, the assassin who speaks in sound effects, that Smith had introduced during his run on Green Arrow gave the naysayers pause for thought.
As with most of Smith's comic book work, each issue would ship later than the last. Only this time, fans were less inclined to complain as each issue was more poorly written and out of character than the last. The gratuitous murder of long time Batman love interest, Silver. St Cloud was the straw that broke the camel’s back. DC quietly stopped soliciting the announced second half of the story arc.
