10 Greatest Batman Comics Of The 21st Century

3. Paul Dini's Detective Comics

Batman Court Of Owls
DC Comics

Batman has been the main Bat title for years. DC puts the most effort getting the best talent on that title, and sometimes the longer running Detective Comics title gets far less fanfare. However, after Infinite Crisis, Paul Dini delivered some of the best Batman stories ever told over on Detective Comics.

The start of Dini's run is when it's strongest. He tells a series of one-shot stories, focusing on different villains and it's just so satisfying to read. Modern comics are often so bogged down with crossover events or stories that are being dragged out longer than they need to, just so they can fit nicely into the upcoming graphic novel. Sometimes it's just nice to read self-contained stories and not have to worry about all the other comics taking place at the time.

Dini is best known for his work on the Batman Animated Series, and this run has a very similar feel to that. But since he's dealing with comics instead of cartoon, he's allowed to tell stories that don't also have to appeal to children. This is essentially the Animated Series, but for an older audience.
