10 Most Controversial Superman Comics Of All Time

3. The Power Couple

Superman Wonder Woman
DC Comics

When DC was rebooted under the New 52, the company knew they couldn't play it safe. They had to shake things up to get readers talking, so they experimented with the characters. The Flash, Wally West, went MIA. Barbara Gordon returned as Batgirl. Starfire and Lobo were redesigned (very badly).

A lot of these changes were frowned upon by readers including the decision to make Superman and Wonder Woman a couple. This idea has been explored in other stories including Kingdom Come and Injustice so readers were curious to see how The Power Couple would work in the main DC continuity.

Sadly, it just didn't fit. For years, Superman was constantly left vulnerable since supervillains kidnapped Lois Lane or used her as a pawn in their schemes. This dynamic was gone now that Supes' girlfriend was as invincible as he was. It felt like the writers forced the pair together as a gimmick, not realising their relationship works better on a platonic level.

When DC Comics was rebooted again in 2016, The Power Couple was retconned so it never happened, making the superheroes' relationship even more pointless.
