Lilith, the Mother of Demons, has been locked away for many millennia. She had left behind many demon children, the Lillin, and they bred with humans to further dilute their bloodline. Doctor Strange began to feel the rumblings of Lilith’s awakening and knew her resurrection would come through her Lillin offspring. Strange also knew that he could not engage Lilith directly because her power was too strong.

Strange found nine people with a fraction of the mystical power needed to thwart Lilith’s plans. The first two of these were the new Ghost Rider, Danny Keith, and his former host Johnny Blaze, known collectively as The Spirits of Vengeance. They battled Lillin, including Blackout, a perennial foe of the Rider. They traveled to New York and recruited Michael Morbius, who had been further mutated by the Lillin Fang. Three people, Victoria Montesi, Louise Hastings, and Sam Buchanan, were in charge of locating and protecting the Darkhold, the mystical Book of Sin.

Doctor Strange freed vampire hunter Blade from a mental hospital. He reunited with his fellow Nightstalkers, vampire Frank Drake and private detective Hannibal King. The team was teleported to Greenland where Lilith's surviving children were opening a rift. While the team fought the Lillin, Ghost Rider engaged Lilith, turning the rift back on her. The Lillin fled and Lilith vowed vengeance before the rift closed.
