When Marc had a nervous breakdown, he was institutionalised and treated by Dr. Emmett. Because of Marc's history of instability, Emmett believed he would've become a psychopath or serial killer if it wasn't for Khonshu's intervention.

After he went on to become a superhero and an Avenger, Emmett theorised her other patients could be treated if they were, like Marc, blessed with powers from the Ancient Egyptian pantheon.

One of her patients, simply called Patient 86, was considered a lost cause and so, Emmett thought he was the perfect candidate for her little experiment. Because Patient 86 was a pyromaniac, Emmett believed his obsession with fire could be curbed if he was bonded with the sun god, Amun Ra.

Although Emmett was merely trying to help her patients, she made one huge mistake. Khonshu is Amun Ra's adopted son and has vowed vengeance against him for millennia. After Amun Ra fused with Patient 86, he was reborn as the Sun King.

Blinded by his rage for Khonshu, the Sun King incinerated the entire facility as well as Dr. Emmett before beginning his manhunt for Khonshu's champion, Moon Knight.
