10 Zany Comic Book Movies That Would Send Fans Wild
7. Dazzler
Long before Marvel created its successful cinematic universe, the company attempted an ambitious cross-promotional tie-in with Casablanca Records back in the 1970's. Disco was still all the rage, so Marvel tried to cash in on this craze by creating a pop star superhero who would have her own real life counterpart selling records, culminating in a movie starring the disco sensation. Marvel heavily publicized their newest hero, but Casablanca Records eventually dropped out due to financial concerns, so the Dazzler received her own solo series instead, proving instantly popular with readers. Over the years though, interest in the character waned and aside from her affiliation with the X-Men, Alison Blaire has since become a minor player in the Marvel Universe. Dazzler is a mutant who is able to transform sound into light, producing a range of effects determined by how she manipulates the frequencies of the spectrum. Some of these include the ability to hypnotize or blind opponents, create complex holograms and even shoot lasers from her fingers. Not your everyday pop star then... The original incarnation of Dazzler was one of the cheesiest characters Marvel have ever created, but in the Ultimate X-Men line, Blaire was re-imagined as a punk rock singer who had far more edge and modern relevance. If Marvel Studios were willing to branch out into another movie genre, then Dazzler could potentially become the star of the world's first superhero musical. It would be hard to avoid the cheesiness entirely, but a multi-media marketing campaign could be more effective now in the digital age than it would have ever been back in the seventies. Whether Marvel should attempt to make a credible Dazzler movie that's actually good or simply dial up the camp factor to 11 is a tough call to make, but either way, such a project has the potential to succeed if handled right.
