Heath Ledger's Joker will go down in history as one of, if not, the best interpretations of the character in movie history. It was clear from the beginning that his character was going to be something different. This started with the make-up. When an image of Ledger's messy, hand-done makeup was released, it was insane.

That was what separated Ledger from the likes of Cesar Romero and Jack Nicholson. Gone was the classy Joker, the smart and calculated comic book villain. Here was the core of the character, the insanity behind the white paint. This Joker was straight up crazy, the kind of Joker from the darker comics, a Joker that embodied the attitudes of the one seen on the pages of The Killing Joke or Arkham Asylum.

This was a true foe for Nolan's darker vision of Batman - one that was really, truly scary.

Sadly, this was Ledger's final role, but it is one that will stand out in movie history. The Joker is a hard one to crack and do right, but Ledger's interpretation hits every beat perfectly.
