Along with Art the Clown of Terrifier fame, Edward Carver is likely the most messed up character introduced to horror audiences across the past decade.

For those wondering, that's the name of the twisted figure at the centre of The Poughkeepsie Tapes. Even if you've watched this John Erick Dowdle picture, chances are you won't be aware of the name of Ben Messmer's villainous lead character as his name is kept out of the movie bar one reference to himself as Ed.

While most experiences with Carver do end up in bloody murder - usually after torture, sexual assault and all kinds of grim mind games - even those who survive yearn for death.

To hammer this point home in brutal fashion, longtime Carver captee Cheryl Dempsey (Stacy Chobsky) is rescued from her tormentor's clutches at the close of The Poughkeepsie Tapes. Unfortunately, Cheryl has spent so long being abused, she views that as the norm and isn't able to adjust to everyday life. So much so, she spends her time alone harming herself to feel the pain she'd become accustomed to.

By the time the movie wraps up, Cheryl tragically takes her own life after not being able fill to the hole of being away from Edward Carver. Even then, Carver ransacks her grave and steals her body.
