You may have heard of imposter syndrome before, but by virtue you really know it’s just all in your head and that you are who you are and you’re right where you need to be. In Solaris, however, you may well actually be an imposter and not have any idea at all!

Psychologist Kris Kelvin is sent on a mission to determine whether it’s worth continuing to study the planet Solaris. On arrival he finds that things are in disarray, the one member of the crew he knew is dead and there are mysterious people wandering the station that weren’t on the original team.

It turns out that these ‘visitors’ started appearing after a certain experiment was conducted on-board the ship, and that they are constructed by the planet based on the memories of surviving crew-members.

Enter Hari: Kris’ late wife. The visitors obviously aren’t real people but they think and feel as if they are, and Hari finds it distressing to be reminded that she isn’t the real deal. She can’t ever be her own person as she can’t exist away from Solaris and she possesses an identity of a dead woman, but she can’t die either and whenever she tries she only resurrects and starts all over again.

She can’t live in happiness and she can’t die either, any semblance of life she manages to gather will surely end up stripped away.
