13 Bonkers Theories About 2016’s Movies That Surely Can’t Be True
9. Martin Freeman Is Red Skull - Captain America: Civil War
The Theory: Martin Freeman's currently unnamed government agent is actually a new incarnation of iconic villain Red Skull, who has used nefarious means to possibly transfer his consciousness into Freeman's body, and seeks to bring The Avengers down once and for all. Why It Could Be True: Because it seems like a huge waste of Freeman's talents to hire him to merely play a stuffed shirt, when he proved with last year's Fargo series that he can play an a**hole as well if not better than he can a plucky hero. In addition, the fact his name still hasn't been revealed a few months ahead of release is pretty strange, and Red Skull is a pivotal part of the Civil War comic, so his inclusion shouldn't feel forced or awkward. Why It Probably Won't Be: Remember that Civil War already has Crossbones and Baron Zemo as villains, so introducing a third major baddie would really make things feel cluttered. This is all in addition to the complex Civil War narrative, so it really just seems like it would be too much of a muchness for one movie. Plus, talented though Freeman is, it's really hard to imagine his soft facial features suiting the Red Skull design at all (even though they can be enhanced with make-up).
