13 Frustratingly Underrated Horror Movie Sequels

3. Hostel Part II

Final Destination 3
Screen Gems

Original Film:

Hostel, Eli Roth's unsuccessful and tedious torture porn horror film which desperately wanted to be as good as Saw, but failed miserably.

Plot:

Three young American women fall into the clutches of Elite Hunting, a sick organisation who kidnaps young people so that paying, wealthy customers can torture them to death.

This has only 44% on Rotten Tomatoes and 5.4 on IMDb. Why?

Hostel Part II was a pleasant surprise. Eli Roth really learnt from his mistakes and crafted a haunting horror film that's one of the best films in the dubious Torture Porn genre.

This seemed to be written off because it's gory, which tends to be an unfair criticism of horror films. If it's gore without meaning, like the first film, then fine but with Hostel II there's more to it.

Hostel II is an atmospheric, disturbing and surprisingly thought-provoking look at humanity's darker side. Interestingly, the story also focuses on the torturers as well as the victims, making this a well-rounded and fleshed-out nightmare with a real emphasis on character development.

Fine, it's an incredibly nasty film but it's a good one without a doubt. Sadly, many reviewers have ignored its many qualities, such as humanized, likable characters, tension, good acting, solid direction and a twisty, clever plot.

Worst of all, it's rated lower than the original despite it being better in literally every single way.

A weak direct-to-DVD sequel ended the trilogy in 2011.
