It goes without saying that the unwritten footnote on Jared Leto's committed, method heavy take on the Joker is that we've already lost one great actor to the role (allegedly), when Heath Ledger went too far down the rabbit hole.

That much hasn't put off Leto, apparently, who spoke to Entertainment Weeky to talk about the prestige of the role:

"You’re kind of walking upon hallowed ground, and it deserves the very best that you can do. It takes over your life and that’s what I needed to do for myself."

He met with psychiatrists and their patients to build an idea of sociopathy and then developed his own take:

"You don’t know what the Joker is going to do next; you never do. It was intoxicating to have no rules."

David Ayer meanwhile talked up the success of the performance, which should definitely be at least partly judged on the reactions of his co-stars and his director:

"As an actor, he’s flinging himself into the abyss on that one. And he was scary on set. He was intimidating. He’d show up and it was like, ‘Dude, you are f—-ing creepy.’"
