10 Benefits To Learning Brazilian Jiujitsu
5. Yoga Improves Your Game
You wouldn't be wrong in initially thinking that the pairing of yoga to BJJ would be like chalk and cheese.
But ask any jiujitsu player what they'd like to improve (besides cardio, strength and technique), and they'll usually tell you it's their flexibility.
And trust me, when you're on the mats enough and learning new and advanced techniques, you'll begin to see why. Yet whilst BJJ is quite a dynamic and often frenetic range of body motions, yoga is slower and more methodical.
However, by practicing the latter, you'll find over time it will help the former. Of course, everyone's different, and it doesn't mean you'll be pulling off berimbolos and inverted sweeps within minutes.
I can say though, from personal experience, that any kind of stretching programme, both before and after training, will help technique and recovery. If you can find a BJJ-specific plan/instructor, it can really aid your game.
Flexibility comes with time and practice, there's no quick method. But yoga can help with the unfamiliar in learning new techniques.
