10 Benefits To Learning Brazilian Jiujitsu
3. Literal Self-Defence
Now, very important caveat here: I am not suggesting that any martial art will help you win fights. There's no magic skill or technique to stopping punches/knives/bullets. The best way to win a fight is not be in one in the first place.
What I am saying, though, is that jiujitsu is an art that teaches both balance and regaining stability. The balance comes from learning and defending throws and takedowns, as you develop your own counter-balances and such.
The stability comes from learning to fight on the floor and the best and safest way to get back up. As a martial art that teaches you fighting on the floor, it also teaches how to avoid staying on there unnecessarily.
The Technical Stand-up, for example, teaches you to get up whilst keeping your assailant in front of you. This prevents you from turning to your knees to get up and risking god knows what hitting you from behind.
Restraints, too, also play a part over some wishy-washy, "no touch" nonsense you see George Dillman peddle out.
Again, this is not promoting have-a-go heroism, but merely a better defence should the worst happen.
