10 Best Free Signings Ever Made By Newcastle United

9. Stuart Pearce

Previous club: Nottingham Forest Signed for NUFC in: 1997

Pearcewas somewhat a surprise signing by Kenny Dalglish in the summer of 1997 after leaving Nottingham Forest following 12 years at the City Ground. Two largely unremarkable seasons at St James' Park saw 'Psycho' categorised as one of the many flops obtained by Dalglish, although we don't feel it is a fair reflection on what he contributed in his 52 appearances in Black and White.

He was a steady, committed and imposing presence at left-back and diligently plugged the hole left by fans favourite John Beresford after he was sold to Southampton mid-way through the season. Better him than Alessandro Pistone. Plus how can we forget that rasping free-kick against Dynamo Kiev in our final Group C fixture as we bowed out of the Champions League with a victory under our belts.
