Since the turn of the Millennium, Whistling Straits has become a popular addition to the major tournament roster by hosting the USPGA Championship on three occasions but the course features in this list for more than just its ability to stage a competition of that magnitude.

Situated in Wisconsin, players who take on the challenge of Whistling Straits will compete with the backdrop of Lake Michigan, with eight holes being played next to the area which offers no protection from high winds. Golfers also have to cope with the elevation changes across the course and the array of deep-pot bunkers that are strategically placed across the 18 holes.

The fast greens also pose a significant test, although that wasn't obvious when Jason Day recorded a tournament score of 20-under-par during the 2015 USPGA Championship. The fact that some high-profile players went several shots over par during the opening two rounds shows that this is a course that can provide high rewards for taking risks, but also leaves the possibility of comfortably missing the cut.
