10 Best Newcastle United Debuts Ever

2. Duncan Ferguson

V Wimbledon (28th November 1998) After the ludicrous waste of money that was Stephane Guivarc'h was somehow sold to Rangers, Ruud Gullit realised he needed another striker and brought in Scottish wildcard Duncan Ferguson from his beloved Everton. He wasn't exactly thrilled to leave, but he didn't show any lack of effort in his debut against Wimbledon at St James Park that November. The big Scot was explosive up front alongside the mostly ineffectual Andrea Andersson, scoring two goals with the game poised at 1-1 to emphatically take the points. His first came in the 59th minute and the follow up came in injury time at the end of the game. He looked some signing. Did It Last? Unfortunately, Ferguson's unhappiness at leaving Everton came out in some of his performances, and though he has become a cult figure at the club (who was unfairly dropped alongside Alan Shearer by Gullit), he scored only 8 goals in 30 games and saw his time at Newcastle ravaged by injuries before Sir Bobby Robson sent him back to Everton. He could have been great, but his injury record was just too poor.
