10 Best Premier League Matches Of The 1990s

10. Newcastle United 5 - 0 Manchester United - 1996/1997

Still Man United's joint heaviest Premier League defeat, it will be right up there in the humiliation stakes alongside their 6-1 home loss to Man City in 2011. Man United are never easily humiliated and this demonstrated just how serious a threat Newcastle's attacking talent could be to the Red's domination of the Premier League. With frighteningly adventurous players on either side, the tie at St James' Park in October was always going to be an open one, this was epitomised by Newcastle's fifth and final goal; centre half Philippe Albert picked up the ball 40 yards out, drove forward and floated a sumptuous chip up and over Peter Schmeichel to cap off a wonderful night. Earlier goals from Darren Peacock, David Ginola, Les Ferdinand and Alan Shearer had already sealed the result, reigniting hopes that Newcastle could repeat their title challenge from the season before where they had spectacularly blown a 12 point lead. Even more poignantly, Man United had begun Newcastle's previous capitulation at the same ground earlier in the year as Eric Cantona's single goal was enough for a 1-0 win. Although it transpired that Newcastle couldn't maintain a title push in a very competitive season, this remains one of Newcastle's greatest ever performances.
