The new-UFC Interim Welterweight Champion went from relative obscurity as a prospect to one of the most hated men in the UFC in just under two years.
Covington had proven that he had the skills to compete in the welterweight division but an ostensibly unexciting fighting style left him languishing on the prelims.
Using the medium of Twitter, Covington did anything he could to annoy the fans, tweeting major spoilers to Infinity War, stating his love for President Trump, and referring to fellow welterweight contender Mike Perry's then-partner as his 'ratchet horse-faced girlfriend.'
However, it took beating jiu-jitsu specialist Damien Maia in his home country for Covington's barbs to reach a wider audience. After earning a hard-fought decision victory in Sao Paolo Covington remarked:
Brazil, you’re a dump! All you filthy animals suck. I’ve got one thing to say: Tyron Woodley, I’m coming for you. If you don’t answer the front door, I’m going to knock it in and I’m going to take what’s mine, that welterweight belt!
It appears that the brash, Donald Trump-fan will get his wish, with a title unification bout likely to be announced soon.
