10 Biggest Football Transfers In History

7. Mo Johnston - Nantes To Rangers (£1.2 million)mo johnston While a move from French club Nantes to Rangers would ordinarily not make headline news, Rangers' £1.2 million signing of Mo Johnston in July 1989 caused anger in both of the Old Firm camps. For before his move to France, Johnston had been a prolific goal-scorer for Celtic, and before signing for Rangers was expected to return to Park Head were it not for financial troubles. In signing for the blue half of Glasgow, Johnston became their highest profile Catholic signing of all time and was labelled 'Judas' by the Celtic faithful. Similarly, Rangers fans burnt scarves and threatened to return their season tickets following the news of the signing. Even the Rangers kit man formed his own form of protest at the transfer, refusing to arrange Johnston's kit. On the field, Johnston became even more prolific with Rangers than he had been with Celtic, helping them to secure two league titles during his two year spell at the club. Though, sadly, his footballing exploits are scarcely remembered in Glasgow, instead his controversial transfer still stirs emotion in both sides of the football mad city.
