1. Anderson 'The Spider' Silva vs Chris Weidman, UFC 162
Result: Weidman by KO (punches) in 2nd round. Traditionally my #2 choice 'Serra vs St-Pierre' is credited as being the greatest upset in MMA, let alone just the UFC. If you're evaluating an upset purely on betting odds it is indeed a greater upset. However, when throwing a fight's ability to induce 'head scratching' into the equation there is no doubt that experiencing Anderson Silva's first UFC defeat is deserving of the #1 spot. Weidman was by no means a challenger who was written off; many UFC fighters interviewed before the event like Rashad Evans, Chael Sonnen and George St-Pierre said they wouldn't be surprised to see Silva lose. But those who predicted that Weidman could pull off the upset were unanimous in thinking that if Weidman won it would have to be a long, drawn out fight where the challenger ground out a victory on points. No one believed that Weidman had it in him to stand with the best striker in MMA and knock him out. In less than 2 rounds Weidman crushed the myth Anderson Silva had spent so many years weaving; the myth of the all-illusive Spider being like water, capable of lowering his hands and dancing around his bemused opponent, avoiding any offence thrown his way. Witnessing this loss was a surreal experience, watching as the best fighter in UFC history had his mortality abruptly exposed.
