10 Biggest Prospects On The WTA Tour
2. Jelena Ostapenko
Jelena Ostapenko hit the headlines at the start of 2016 for nearly hitting a ball-boy with her racquet but it should not distract from the strides that the Latvian has made up the WTA rankings.
The 18-year-old is still awaiting a major run at a Grand Slam tournament but blasting through a stacked field in Doha in February catapulted her to within touching distance of the top 32.
Beating the likes of Petra Kvitova and Andrea Petkovic should not be treated in isolation though. Ostapenko won the girls' singles at Wimbledon in 2014 and reached as high as number two in the junior rankings before she achieved two eye-catching milestones in 2015.
She dropped just two games in a 6-2 6-0 demolition of Carla Suarez Navarro at Wimbledon - a victory which represented her first victory over a top-10 player - before she reached the final of a WTA event in Quebec in September.
Aside from run in Doha, Ostapenko has had little to shout about over the past seven months but bulldozing past Grand Slam champions and former top-10 hitters gave everyone a glimpse of what she is truly capable of.
