10 Biggest World Cup Upsets Of All Time

8. Switzerland 1 - 0 Spain (2010)

The Spain team between 2008 and 2012 was truly one of the greatest sides in the history of International football. In the finals of the three major tournaments in that period, La Roja played 19 games, winning 17 and drawing and losing just one each.

The only team to defeat Spain in the finals of a major tournament during this period were Switzerland, making history as Spain became the first team ever to lose their opening match and go on to lift the World Cup.

Spain dominated the game but Switzerland's defence remained resolute throughout despite being dominated in possession. A goalmouth scramble in the second half provided former Manchester City midfielder Gelson Fernandes with the opportunity to grab a career-defining winner in the 52nd minute.

Unfortunately, Switzerland would not continue on with their fairytale story. A draw in their final group game with Honduras meant they narrowly missed out on qualification to the knockout stage. Spain however, would not be discouraged by the loss and went on to take the tournament by storm, winning every successive game and conceding just once en-route to securing their first World Cup.
