With Arsenal on the hunt for a striker this summer, it begs the question - why didn’t they act quickly and swoop for Michy Batshuayi?

An aerial presence, a strong runner and prolific goalscorer, the Belgian would have been tailor-made for Arsene Wenger’s side. His pace would have added an extra dynamic to the squad, offering an alternative to Olivier Giroud’s more static approach. Instead, Arsenal dawdled, Crystal Palace put a bid in and Chelsea sealed the deal for £33 million. To rub salt into the wound, the 22-year-old was an Arsenal fan growing up.

“My preferred destinations are England or Germany. If you ask my favourite team, I’ll say Arsenal. It is a club with a good philosophy, where youngsters get their chance. I’ve been an Arsenal fan since I was a kid.” - Michy Batshuayi, March 2014.

So when Arsenal are stuck this season with a strike force of Giroud, Takuma Asano, Theo Walcott and a one-legged Danny Welbeck, let’s hope they won’t live to regret their laissez-faire attitude to the Belgian hotshot and self-confessed Gunner.
