10 Controversies & Scandals That Rocked Chelsea

4. Adrian Mutu's Failed Drugs Test

Chelsea hit the back pages of newspapers for all the wrong reasons when Adrian Mutu disgraced both the club and himself by failing a drugs test for cocaine in 2004. The forward tested positive for the illegal substance and wound up battling the Blues through the high courts in the aftermath.

Mutu was handed a seven month football ban and hammered with a £20,000 fine by the FA while his contract was terminated by Chelsea, though it wouldn't end there as the Romanian took his case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport after the Blues sought compensation over the player€™s shocking breach of contract. Mutu made THREE appeals after being told to pay compensation - the last to the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland - but that too was dismissed and the player was eventually ordered to pay Chelsea ‚17 million in damages.

The shamed star was able to resurrect his playing career thereafter and spent time at Fiorentina, but disgraced himself yet again in 2010 after failing another drugs test with the Italians, testing positive for Sibutramina, a substance that counters hunger.
