10 Controversies & Scandals That Rocked Liverpool

2. Luis Suarez's Bite

Another controversy to hit Liverpool and Luis Suarez in particular came in 2013 during a Premier League clash with Chelsea. in the dying embers of the game, the Reds striker could be seen grabbing hold of Blues' defender Branislav Ivanovic's arm and clamping down with his teeth in an off the ball incident. It was one of the most astonishing things Premier League fans had ever seen, and was perhaps the only incident of its kind in the history of English football.

For the scandal, Suarez was hammered with a 10-match ban by the FA and was also fined by Liverpool. Astonishingly, this wasn't the first time the Uruguayan had bitten an opponent. He had done it before €“ to PSV Eindhoven€™s Otman Bakkal in 2010 while playing for Ajax - and would do it again at this summer's World Cup when he sank his teeth into Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini's shoulder, this time receiving a four-month world football ban.

That latter incident proved to be a bridge to far for Liverpool and Suarez, whose position at Anfield had now become untenable. Their working relationship was ended with his £75 million sale to Barcelona earlier this summer and so departed one of the most controversial players of the Premier League era.
