10 Controversies & Scandals That Rocked Man Utd

2. The Glazer Family Takeover

To this day the Glazer family takeover of Manchester United remains a controversial move. In May 2005, the family, headed by Malcolm Glazer, purchased the club for £790 million - and you only need to glance at the fans clad in yellow and green to learn how well that went down. Glazer's takeover of United was largely funded by loans secured against the club's assets, resulting in the Red Devils being saddled with millions of pounds of debts. Almost ten years on, the Manchester club remain in debt as a direct result of the takeover and still owe a reported £361 million. Fans continue to protest over the buyout with some wearing yellow and green kits and waving similarly-coloured scarves to signify their discontent - yellow and green being the colour United first wore when they were founded as Newton Heath in 1878.
