2. GSP vs. Silva
The only fight bigger than Jones vs. Silva at the time. Not just the best of a weight class against the best of a weight class, but the greatest of all time vs. the greatest of all time. A match that could definitively, or as close to it as you could come, determine who the best fighter in mixed martial arts history was. Or at the very least, in UFC history. This fight was talked about for years, up to the point that Silva was defeated twice by Chris Weidman. After that, well, was there a point? GSP essentially retired as champion, and all hope for the fight was gone. During those years though? The debates were intense. Who would win? GSP himself said that were he to fight Silva, he'd go up in weight class full time, putting on the pounds the right way. There was talk of Silva dropping down. Of catchweights. There never seemed to be any agreement within reach however. Dana White agreed with the catchweight idea, telling the Dave & Mahoney show in August 2012 that "I think that if we do the fight with Silva and Georges St-Pierre, it would be at a catchweight. Probably like 178, something like that." He also indicated that GSP had to beat Carlos Condit first, which he did. GSP's attention on the superfight was never all that focused however, and he wound up distracted by Nick Diaz - another "super fight" that turned into an easy win for the welterweight champion. This is yet another dream fight still talked about, as GSP indicated in March of 2014 that were he to return to the sport of MMA, he'd be open to a fight with Anderson Silva. With Silva having lost twice and winless since 2012, however, is the mystique gone?
