10 Excruciatingly Awkward UFC Post Fight Interviews
3. Alistair Overeem Thinks Stipe Miocic Tapped
Joe Rogan said after this that he'd never interview a fighter who had just been knocked out. In retrospect, it's amazing that even in 2016 fighters were being interviewed mere minutes after being knocked unconscious.
In a very entertaining fight at UFC 203, Stipe Miocic would come back from being dropped with a straight left hand and almost guillotined to defeat Alistair Overeem late in the first round. While it was ground and pound strikes that finished off the Dutchman, one landed flush and The Reem was clearly knocked unconscious.
After talking to Miocic, Joe Rogan asked Overeem about the fight. In front of Stipe's adoring Cleveland fans, a clearly dazed and confused Overeem told Rogan he "clearly felt a tap" on the guillotine. The crowd were a little distracted as their home town hero was heading out to take in the adoration of his fellow Ohioans. As the potential controversy unfolded, the truck pulled up a replay.
The first replay was pretty conclusive that there was no tap and the fans, realising why they were watching the replay, started to boo heavily. A glutton for punishment, Overeem waited as another angle was shown to clearly confirm there was no submission from Miocic. Rogan wrapped up the interview quickly as an embarrassed Overeem shook his hand and left. This was painful, but at least we'll never see a knocked out fighter interviewed again in UFC, so at least there was something positive to come out of this calamity.
